Sunset in Bora Bora from our Suite

Because of its fame and beauty, little Bora Bora is a playground for the well to do, occasionally the famous.  It has seen an explosion of hotel construction in recent years, with piers and over water bungalows reaching out like tentacles over its gorgeous lagoon. If you've never been here before, you'll appreciate why James A. Michener wrote that this half-atoll/half-mountain is the world's most beautiful island and we hope that our pictures help to capture some of that tremendous beauty.

Bora Bora and the Lagoon

Lying 230km (143 miles) northwest of Tahiti, Bora Bora consists of a high center completely surrounded by a lagoon, enclosed by coral reef. What makes it so beautiful is the combination of sand-fringed islets sitting on the outer reef, the multihued lagoon cutting deep bays into the central high island, and Bora Bora's trademark, the basaltic tombstone known as Mount Otemanu, towering over it all. Next to it is the more normal Mount Pahia.

The Mountains

These two mountains never seem quite the same from any two different viewpoints – you’ll see that clearly in some of the pictures we took.  All of the pictures that have the mountains in the background were taken during our two-week honeymoon and each picture of the mountains looks different. Mount Otemanu can look like a tombstone from one direction, a needle from another. Compared to some of the other islands in the chain, Bora Bora is relatively low therefore it doesn't get as much rain as Tahiti, Moorea, and Raiatea.
